Building a Dementia-Friendly Washington: Join the Movement with Dementia Friends

Dementia affects over 120,000 people in Washington State, with nearly 300,000 family members and caregivers supporting them. To foster understanding and reduce stigma, the Dementia Friends Washington initiative, led by the UW Medicine Memory and Brain Wellness Center on behalf of the Dementia Action Collaborative, is empowering communities through education and volunteerism.

What Is Dementia Friends?

Dementia Friends is a global movement that aims to change the way people think, act, and talk about dementia. Developed by the Alzheimer’s Society in the United Kingdom, the program helps communities worldwide understand what dementia is and how it affects people. In Washington State, the initiative is active in 25 counties and continues to expand.

How It Works

The program operates through volunteer-led information sessions where participants learn five key messages about dementia:

  • Dementia is not a normal part of aging.

  • It is caused by diseases of the brain.

  • It’s not just about memory loss—it can affect thinking, communication, and everyday tasks.

  • People with dementia can live well.

  • There’s more to the person than the dementia.

After attending a session, individuals become “Dementia Friends” and are encouraged to take small actions to support those living with dementia in their communities.

Become a Dementia Friends Champion

For those interested in taking a more active role, the program offers training to become a Dementia Friends Champion. Champions are individuals who lead information sessions and help spread awareness in their local areas. Training sessions are available virtually, making it accessible for volunteers across the state.
